
It depends on your goals. If you enjoy playing and being with your friends, town baseball is terrific.
If your goal is to play at the college level, the advanced instruction and competition is a must.
For example, I don’t know any players in my town, or the surrounding towns, that are playing at the collegiate level who did not play travel/AAU.
As I have witnessed, the competition at the town level is simply not strong enough to prepare a player for high level competition. As many of you are aware, travel baseball competition will include all-star caliber players from an entire region, rather than the best players from one town.
I’ve seen this level of competition elevate dozens upon dozens of players, whereas in most cases the players in town leagues (heck, high school baseball is town ball as well!) progress at a much slower state.
